Thanks for this - though I could not find the "propagate labels" option
- could you show me where it is?

In Word 2007, go to the Mailings tab and then in the Write & Insert Fields
section of the ribbon, the Update Labels button invokes the Propogate Labels
command.

I get as far as the "WRite & Insert fields" section of the ribbon, but
the "Update Labels" button is grayed out.

That will be the case if the Mail Merge main document is NOT a label type
main document. Go back to the first step and change the main document type
(back to) a label type document.
