I,ve got exactly the same problem with matlab 7.9.0(R2009b), but I've found something extrange in the configuration files that could be related with this error.

The file msvc90compp.stp
located inside C:\Archivos de programa\MATLAB\R2009b\bin\win32\mbuildopts

inludes a line that has this info:
my $default_location = "C:\\Program Files\\....

but the correct path is C:\Archivos de programa\ in the spanish Windows system. So the m file that creates the compopts.bat file using the lcccompp.bat creates an incorrect file.

I think that this error es related with the problem that mbuild -setup does not find the compiler in the correct path, but I dont know how to solve
