From: Tinfoil Hat on 12 Feb 2010 04:14 Hi all, I'm using headset+microphone. In alsamixer I can control the mic volume and can hear my own voice coming back through the headphone. Yet on skype I'm completely dumb. I've tried all the mic opions available in skype. Any idea? Thanks

Aside from playing around with the controls in skype, have you tried playing around with the (possibly) many and various controls in alsamixer and/or kmix? Hearing yourself come back through the headphone is one thing, but it doesn't mean that the problem is necessarily skype. Have you tried using something like arecord to record an audio file and then play it back (with, for example, aplay) to see if you can hear anything that way? Good luck, you might need it :-) Jim

I've had similar trouble. With some sound cards just choosing (in alsamixer) the mic to be the capture device is enough to enable its use in Skype (and arecord/aplay). For other cards you may need to also turn up the Capture Volume in alsamixer (use F4 to see the capture controls). I had a really tough time getting Skype to work on my IBM Thinkpad. I think the trick on that one involved a third control, ADC, and maybe a volume for it also. I'm not sure, because, after a brief success, it hasn't continued to work for me. -Joe
