I sent Canon support the message, got the same answer. In German, mind,
since that's where I am right now. So it's an international cop-out :=)

Anyway, I have no idea whether Microsoft or Canon are to blame in the
end. Lots of finger-pointing either way.

But I do know that giving the printer to a virtual copy of Windows XP
(i.e. not just sharing it, but actually attaching it to the virtual OS)
does work.

My route to printing is therefore now:

1. Switch on PC
2. Switch on wife's PC
3. Start Virtual PC on my PC
4. Wife can print :=)

While I think it's good it works, you would think that this would
actually be less likely to work than the normal method of simply
installing a driver and connecting to a shared printer.

And obviously, this only works on Windows 7 if you have access to
Virtual PC (i.e. Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate).

My favorite error message was on my wife's XP PC, while trying to
persuade Windows that it would maybe like to install the exact same
printer that it had been using only a week ago (from my old XP box).
Since the already-installed driver didn't work (no idea why), I had
downloaded the new Canon 32-bit drivers, EXPANDed them and pointed the
printer setup utility to the right folder.

Result?

"A newer driver is installed. This installation will now abort."

You can't make this stuff up.
