It was someone's first time in the building elevator, and they were
startled about how fast the elevator accelerated to head to a high
floor. They yelped in surprise, and one of the other occupants of the
elevator, worried that there was something wrong (such as a scarf caught
in the door) pressed the emergency stop button. The alarm bell rang for
the elevator, and that momentarily distracted the person coding the link
for a second so they typed the wrong character. The automated link
checker did not notice it because it happened that the link with the
altered character happened to exist internally (just not published). And
that's the story of why the link error occurred.
