In Lenny, I've got it set to "standard", which uses the default theme.

Open GConf Editor and browse (or search) for "/apps/notification-daemon":

***
popup_location: bottom_right
theme: standard
***

Not sure if just changing the style will be enough for you :-)

You could also use /usr/bin/notification-properties, with the added
value of a preview button.

Indeed its configurability for some reason is extremely limited.. :/
