I am trying to update an old machine, but when I go to the express otion, it
comes back with no updates are needed. I look on the history and the last
updat is from June of 2008. Any clues why this is happening?

No clues as to what OS and what service pack it might be? Even what
architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) the OS is... So - not really.

Help people assist you. Give some details. ;-)

What AntiVirus you have installed?
What you have tried in order to fix this issue yourself?

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
(No "RUN", press the WindowsKey+R at the same time.)
winver
--> Click OK.

That will give you (picture at top) the full name of the operating system.
That will give you (in the test) the Service Pack you have installed.

Windows version is...?

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of
Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT
fix this!
