does anyone have an especially good source for datasheets and or pin
outs for old ic's. i have obtained a naked 40 pin dip chic for a
digital clock and can't do much but look at it without a spec sheet.
it's a 'mm5396n' manufactured by national semiconductor.

National Semiconductor MOS/LSI databook. I can scan and send to your email if you like.

http://www.datasheetarchive.com
http://www.alldatasheet.com
http://www.datasheetcatalog.com

and of course
http://www.google.com

And, also of course, none of them seem to have info on that ol' timer.
(no pun intended, really)

I probably built a clock with that chip or a close relative, back in the
day.

You might also try over at Jameco; they likely carried it once upon a
time, either the bare chip or as part of a Jim-pak clock kit. The back
of a rather yellowed AY-5-2376 (1980 date code on the chip) Jim-pak
package shows an MM5262 and MM5314N.

It won't be in their current inventory but you might get lucky with a
call to customer support.
