Is this a workstation or a server? Does it run an NFS client or NFS server? Can you give us a brief history of this machine, what it's used for? What happens when you execute "aptitude install nfs-common"? If you get an error, please paste it here, in its entirety. What happens when you execute "aptitude install portmap"?
