Hi
I can't remember the name of the command that probe the kind of a
filesystem... if it is ext2, ext3, raiser, vfat etc. (before mount it
for example...)

for mounting just use mount -t auto.
Then there is vol_id and
as root there is blkid /dev/hd* or /dev/sd*
