What is "Emacs.base?" I built Emacs 23.1 on my iBook (10.4.11) and
installed it, but there is no "Emacs.base" file anywhere on my computer.

Also, after you have deleted an application and subsequently try to open
a file associated with that application, you will normally get a dialog
box that says something like "There's no application for that file.
What would you like to use to open it?"

Sounds like there is some other issue at work with your Mac, but I don't
know what it is. You did actually drag the nextstep folder containing
Emacs 23.1 to the trash and empty the trash?

that's a good question and knowing the answer maybe will lead to an
obvious solution but, sorry, i don't know the answer --- if you can
accept a speculation instead of an answer, maybe it is because there
was already an Emacs.app (Carbon Emacs, that is) installed on my iBook

no, i trashed the Dock icon and did a make distclean in the
~/src/emacs23.1, this left of course an almost void nextstep directory
and in effects the Finder (is it the Finder?) says that "the
application is damaged...", not "There's no application..."

let's try

[... time flows in the usual direction ...]

ok, i did a "rm -fr src/emacs23.1", opened a folder with some .tex
files, double clicked one of them and ZOOM, Carbon Emacs opens the file!

thank you Tim, you've hit the spot!

ps: if someone could explain why it was not possible to change the
file association...
