Hi there,
I am running a fresh install of FreeBSD 8.0, with Postfix 2.8-20100306,
amavisd-new, SA like MTA, besides Squid and Bind DNS.

It was running as secondary MX, and not sending mails -besides bounces-
for a week or so since install without problems.

Yesterday, I set it up like gateway for the Outgoing mails.

But a couple of hours later, I got the alert of SMTP down. Other
services were OK ( Squid & DNS ) but Postfix was 'dead'. The reload
command said OK, but no way. postfix stop didn't worked.

The log showed:

Any idea what's going on?

I just turned on -v in smtp and qmgr, to see next failure....but if
anyone has an idea what to do, great!

Best regards

Amavis reports that the /usr/local/bin/file command is hanging.
Note that the file command is not part of Postfix (or Amavis).

Amavis reports that other stuff is hanging too.

[other amavis warnings omitted...]

19:22:36 - 19:05:57 = 999 seconds, the queue manager watchdog timeout.

Postfix runs fine on FreeBSD 8 (here, since November 2009).

I suspect there is a problem with your system. Once your operating
system is working properly, you can ask any Postfix related question
here.

Ok, i got it, part of FreeBSD you mean.
A little backwards, I found:

197379-Mar 15 19:03:32 fobos postfix/qmgr[24106]: 80AF81140A1: removed

[11805] running /usr/local/bin/file is still alive, using a bigger hammer

Ok, and after this timout, no recover? I couldn´t kill postfix nor qmgr!
Even amavisd was hanged.

Postfix runs fine on FreeBSD 8 (here, since November 2009) as well
as any FreeBSD vesion that I have been running since I started work
on Postfix in 1997.

Your problem is a broken operating system that causes timeouts in
Amavis, Postfix, and in other programs.

This is the Postfix mailing list. It is not the right place to debug
broken operating system installations.

Once you have a properly working operating system, you are welcome
to ask any Postfix related question here.

Fine, just amavisd and postfix.
