From: Cliff Galiher - MVP on 20 May 2010 00:11 When you chose to move the computers from a domain to a workgroup, you removed the password for the computer account from the computer. So there is no *simple* way to revert to the previous configuration for the clients. You will have to use the connect wizard to join the the domain. With that said, it sounds like your essential concern is with preserving user profile settings. THAT can be done even while using the wizard. That is, in fact, an option during the join process. So in that regard, you are covered. -Cliff "Popinator" <Popinator(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8150A7CC-78CE-4CAC-A2E5-BCB433130552(a)microsoft.com... > We had a large problem (previous post "SBS 2k3 sp2 problem after power off > "posted May13 I posted my solution there). From: Larry Struckmeyer[SBS-MVP] on 20 May 2010 07:03 Assuming a new domain, you have to join. This will create a "new" user profile, and as others have pointed out will allow you to copy over the previous, non-domain profile to the new. But, there is some FUD factor here, so I would like to add. If XP stations, the "previous settings", meaning the desktop, favorites, my docs (which should be redirected to the SBS) and so on are in: C:\documents and settings\username(.domain for the period of domain join). If Vista or Win 7 stations, the folders are in C:\Users The usual things of concern are Desktop, Favorites, Documents and perhaps email from a pst file. All these settings are "separate but additive". By that I mean that you can copy from one user set into another. Of course you would need permissions to do so, but it is available if you need to. Worse case is that you login to the workstation as the domain admin, copy the folders from each of the prior users to the current one. Any pst file has to be dealt with (or ignored) by importing or coping to the new outlook profile into the new exchange mailbox. When you are sure all settings (that are on the local station) are set, you can delete prior users (or not, your choice). If you have other settings of concern, please let us know which and we will try to point you to a solution. - Larry Please post the resolution to your issue so others may benefit - Get Your SBS Health Check at www.sbsbpa.com > We had a large problem (previous post "SBS 2k3 sp2 problem after power > off "posted May13 I posted my solution there). From: Popinator on 20 May 2010 09:55 thanks for the reply. To clarify some things. All that happened was that the connections were lost within the server (could not get to anyone on the network or could not get outside) no one on the internal network could get to the database or access any other assests on the network. the only change made to the server was the removal of antivirus software. The OLD AD is still there. There were a couple of machines that were not moved to the temp workgroup and as soon as I removed the AV all these machines were connected back to the server I did nothing to them. OS was not reinstalled nothing was changed on the server. From: Popinator on 21 May 2010 10:23 Mr. Porter thank you for your reply. I do appreciate the assistance. To answer the questions in your first reply, no I could not ping them either way. What finally happened was this : I reconfigured the machine I was working on back to the way I had orginally set it up for the peer to peer network and checked to make sure it was working, then using suggestions from the list in Mr. Russel's post and suggestions from Mr. SuperGumby, I switched the nic to DHCP, then right click MyComputer then properties, then Computer name tab, then "change", leave computer name the same but select the "Domian" radio button and enter your domain name, click "OK" it will come back stating you have joined the "Domain" and you need to reboot, after it reboots log in as you would on the network but make sure on the logon screen that you switch the third line "Log onto:" to read the "Domain" not the computer if the "Log onto:" is not visible click the "Options" button and it should appear, click "OK" then it should reconnect to the network and return you to the desktop you were using before being moved to the per to peer. I had tried this before but I would reboot at the wrong time or do all steps without rebooting inbetween, thus it failed to work. I hope this helps others that get in a similar situation. This will NOT work if you have reinstalled SBS as stated by Mr. Struckmeyer in his post. Again I thank you all for your assistance. Mr. Russel thank you for your reply. Using your suggestions coupled with those of Mr. SuperGumby nad Mr. Struckmeyer. I was able to get my users back to their old desktops and settings without a problem. Here is how: On the machines I had changed to Peer to Peer I switched the NIC to DHCP then right clicked My Computer then properties, then Selected the "Computer Name" tab, then clicked on the "Change..." button, I left the computer name the same ( I had not changed it) clicked on the "Domain" Radio Button then entered my domain name, after rebooting on the logon screen I entered my domain user name and password then made sure that the "Log onto:" line read the name of the domainand was reconnected to the domain and users had their desktops and settings back. Again thanks for your assistance.
