I hope I hadn't killfiled everyone who tried to reply

Several incarnations ago (DOS/Win3.1) there was a simple free wav
player called wplayany.
When you clicked on a wav file it would play the file. It wouldn't open
any windows or do anything except play the file then go away.
Unfortunately it doesn't work with newer versions of windows.
Is there something else that will behave exactly this way but work with
more recent versions of windows.

Look for vbwav.exe by Jose Falcao. The latest version seems to be
1.1.2.8 which I haven't tried. I am using an older version (0.5.0.4)
which works fine for me on XP set as the default opener for .wav files.

Well since my version seemed so out of date I thought I would update it
but found problems with the 1.1.2.8 version. The 1.1.1.4 version worked
fine however on both XP and Windows 7 64bit in setting it as the default
handler for .wav files. The big difference I see in v1.1.1.4 from
v0.5.0.4 is that it creates a small .ini in its home directory.

Since I have forgotten where the versions originally came from and most
sites just link to the latest version I zipped them up and uploaded them
to rapidshare.
