From: k on 11 Apr 2010 12:02 I have a toshiba e800 pocketPC upgraded to 2003 SE ... and I have a problem the battery went flat and I've now to restore everything - an arduous task i'd rather avoid. I had backed upto the CF card everything in the past and successfully restored it all when this happened before, but I dont seem to be able to do it this time for some reason using the restore feature - It's possible I had another backup utility on the toshiba, but I can't for the life of me think what it might have been the CF card has the folder 'backup_data' containing the file backup.dat if that offers a clue any ideas? thanks
From: tc on 11 Apr 2010 20:56 Make sure you have the Regional Settings the same as when you did the backup before trying to restore. From: Beverly Howard on 12 Apr 2010 10:09 Also, it sounds like it's been a really long time since you used your backup feature, so, do you know which program you have been using? (.dat is a common backup file extension) If you used a third party bu program, you will have to re-install that app first, then run it to restore. Hot tip... assuming the restore will be successful, if you had customized the start menu and start menu program folder shortcuts, after the reboot, open file explorer and delete everything in these two folders _EXCEPT_ the file explorer shortcut, then restore. Hope that this information is of value. Beverly Howard

I set all the regional settings the same and you're quite right, it's been aages since I used the backup feature .. the PPC has been used mostly for the vaious apps, with databases and e-books being used as is an unedited, so regular backups have proven unnecessary I recall figuring the whole backup (it's about 65Mb) was the easiest method for me to restore everything to it's rightful place in the event of a failure, and I recall using this feature only once in the last few years.. problem is as I said, I can't for the life of me recall what tool I may have used, and if it was the toshiba's own backup feature, why it would fail the backup file extension wasn't so much the issue, I wondered if anyone could recall data being backed up to a folder called backup_data - is this where a normal backup is stored? thanks for the various replies people =) karl

I, therefore, also recommend switching to either a decent third-party backup tool (e.g., Sprite / Spb Backup) or ActiveSync's own one if you often ActiveSync your PDA.
