Fireball was a Quantum family. Quantum was acquired by Maxtor, which
was then acquired by Seagate.

If your USB ports are limited to USB 1.1, then your drive's transfer
rate will be about 1GB/s. A USB 2.0 port usually rates at 20MB/s.

You can use a generic USB mass storage driver:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

As an internal drive, the standard Win98SE EIDE driver will limit you
to 28-bit LBA, ie a max capacity of 128GiB / 137GB. You can get
updated 3rd party drivers (freeware and payware) that will support up
to 500GB, maybe more.

This forum is an excellent source of Win98 information:

Because most of the time you dont get to exceed the speed limit
with cars, but you can go as fast as you like with the hard drive.

>>> Yes, SATA is faster, but a USB plugin drive works OK.

I believe I'll go with the controller card. prolly easier to set up
given the 48LBA issue.

know any thing about this card by via? its an ata-133/sata2 card.

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=213271884&listingid=63280122

the hard drive I have is ata-100, but its on a mobo with ata-33, basic ide.
