I managed to find this with Yahoo Groups - which just doesn't seem to
work, full stop - but couldn't spot it with Google Groups. Thanks to
your suggestion, I googled it (ha!) and it turns out you just add
"+subscribe" to the group's email address (eg
groupname+subscribe(a)googlegroups.com)

Managers is fine - that'll be me. It's just the subscribers than need it
simple. It does seem somewhat flakey though - so far my email to the
group (so far consisting of three people) made it to C but not H. C's
reply made it to H but not me.

Well if you have got access to Mailman it's quick and easy to set up.
