From: didds on 14 Jan 2010 10:00 this may well be a FAQ but having searched I can;t find anything that seems as "simple" as this query so here goes... server platform: dell PC + solaris 10 x 86 u8 10/09 named sun2 client platform: Dell + windows XP (SP3) vanilla install of solaris, a single user ian added with home directory /export/home/ian smb.conf edited to change the workgroup name to NIKKO (local network windows networking workgroup name) otherwise left "as is" and samba restarted via svcadm. However, I cannot "see" the server on "my network" ... but then again i can;t see another solaris 8 server (named sun1) on the same network that is successfully running samba 3.2.0 either so whatever is happening is seemingly not unusual! But... what I can do is connect to shares on the solaris 8 server - but I can't do that on the sol 10 server. I can start-run "\\sun2" which prompts me for a login... but "ian" login doesn;t connect like what it does on sun1 (sol8). I am clearly missing something - like how to get samba working out of the box :-) anybody know what I need to tweak/change? cheers ian

To "see" the system on the network, enable the "wins" service. > But... what I can do is connect to shares on the solaris 8 server - > but I can't do that on the sol 10 server. > > I can start-run "\\sun2" which prompts me for a login... but "ian" > login doesn;t connect like what it does on sun1 (sol8). > > I am clearly missing something - like how to get samba working out of > the box :-) > > anybody know what I need to tweak/change? You must create the Samba password for the user with "smbpasswd -a <user>"
