I just copied and pasted, and fixed two lines that were broken into
two by the newsreader, and it ran fine.

Most likely you have an old version. I'm using R2010a. What version
are you using?
I'm not sure when the .createMask method was born.
You can call the Mathworks and ask them, or just upgrade to the latest
version.

It worked very well. Just had some trouble updating the image processing toolbox, thats all.
