Benchmark the hard drive, it's probably the primary bottleneck unless you have a lot of OEM preinstalled software running (in which case disable/uninstall that stuff you don't use).

I knew a Mo. Took her to an interesting bar in a seedy part of town and she never went out with me again. So what do I know? Anyway, if you are using 191 M out of 256 M physical memory, and 249 out of 478 total, you need to increase your memory. Two, how many processes does Task Manager list with just an email client, a browser and Task manager running? On the menu bar, Options, make sure you have show 16 bit tasks selected, then on the bottom left corner, make sure you have the box checked to show tasks from all users. Then just read across the status bar at the very bottom of the TM window. The number of running tasks in TM should be high 20's to low 30's, the lower the better given the small amount of RAM in the machine. Here's the information from a fast (for what it is) XP SP2 computer: Processes: 29 --- Cpu Usage (as I'm doing this): 2-4% --- Commit charge: 317M / 2921M. Physical memory is 2 gigs: that 2.9 gigs includes the page file. That's not comparable to yours, but notice the ratio in, again, a fast machine. Disk: your disk will always be a problem. But it's not as significant as lack of memory or a overly bloated and inefficient XP install and bunch of running tasks. Finally, have you got the latest bios and drivers from HP? Check this page for drivers and BIOS : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=fr&lang=fr&dlc=fr&product=296474 and here for the FAQ, which includes articles on improving performance: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documentIndex?lc=en&cc=fr&dlc=en&product=296474&lang=en&# Good luck.

The Pc was with 128 Mb of RAM when bought. nevertheless i keep your ideas for later. I want first to investigate the other answers . Thanks

No difference in taking off the starting programs of msconfig
