The support in OOo is for the formats introduced with Office 2007 (an
early version of Office Open XML), not with the Microsoft Office XML
formats, so the file is not recognized as one that OOo can use. Neither
conforms to the "standard" Microsoft pushed through for its future XML
types, so they will lose MS support before too long anyway.

When you refer to Open Office for Windows -- did you actually download
from www.openoffice.org, or somewhere else? Or did you not download and
install at all? Ordinary use of OOo does not require registration on the
web site. Registration is needed for forum participation, submitting
issues, and other things like that, not for using the applications or
for participating in mailing lists like this one (where your messages
are seen by volunteers, not by anybody in OOo administration). Why do
you expect to log in?

By the way, please respond only to the list (discuss(a)openoffice.org), so
others can help as needed.

A little confusion, I think -- I was talking specifically about .docx,
and about Microsoft's support for its own older formats, which tends to
disappear. I'm sure OOo will do its best to continue supporting all the
formats it knows of, including the Office 2007 XML-based ones (both that
and WordML use the .docx extension, and the situation will only get
worse with the new "standard" Office Open XML). I don't think that's
ever included the ones Mircea is describing, though, and I doubt that
any new programming effort is likely for those formats because of the
likelihood of a very limited audience. The developers get stretched very
thin just in dealing with current issues and new capabilities. I can't
speak for the developers, though, I'm just a bystander.
