From: Michael Robinson on 17 Jul 2010 08:16 I downloaded mathematica tonight so I can do an assignment. I have to modify a file our teacher posted on the class website, solve some equations and generate a curve... okay, this file ends in the extension nb. I need to know how to make the commands in the file execute. Now don't laugh. I put the cursor at the end of the line (for example a ParametricPlot command) and hit enter. I get a carriage return. My problem is so elementary that the help menus don't even address it.
From: David Park on 18 Jul 2010 01:03 Shift-Enter or Enter on the numeric keypad, or the Enter button on the Basic Math Assistant Calculator tab. It really would be nice if the public thought enough of Mathematica that young people were exposed to it early and didn't have to learn the basics in the middle of some course dealing with substantial material. Or maybe this is primarily about learning Mathematica. If you are going to have any success at all with Mathematica, you should at a minimum go to the Help menu select Virtual Book and read the introductory material. You can access that by clicking on arrows to the left of headings in the window you see until you get to specific articles. The articles can be read by clicking on them which will open them in a separate window. One of the nice aspects of the Virtual Book is the windows that open are Mathematica notebooks which means you can execute any of the commands to get a result. Further, you can edit the parameters and re-execute the command to see how it changes the output. And since any changes you make to these documentation notebooks won't be saved, you can change things without fear of messing up the documentation.

If you use a keyboard with a numeric keypad, press Enter on the num. keypad. Otherwise, or in alternative, press shift-Return (Return is the big key on the main keyboard area, it is also - sometimes and erroneously - called Enter) Laptops normally do not have a numeric keypad, so you will use shift- Return
From: Tomas Garza on 18 Jul 2010 01:06 You must use Shift-Enter. If you have an extended keyboard, i.e., one with the numeric keys at the right, you may use the Enter in the small keyboard. The cursor needs not be at the end of the line, as long as it is in the same cell. -Tomas > Date: Sat, 17 Jul 2010 08:15:51 -0400 > From: kellrobinson(a)yahoo.com > Subject: total newbie > To: mathgroup(a)smc.vnet.net > > > > I downloaded mathematica tonight so I can do an assignment.
