Did get all the Office 2003 and Outlook updates. Didn't really help.

Was able to find and run the scanpst file. So far, there has been
improvement. However...

in the "repair" process, a ton of inbox files went missing. Now, the repair
had the option for backing up the .pst file before fixing checked. But I
can't figure out where the backed up .pst file is. (The missing emails are
not in the "recovered" folder created by scanpst.exe.)

I want to at least temporarily set Outlook to use the original .pst file so
we can somehow salvage the missing inbox (probably hundreds of files) and
then go back to the fixed .pst file and move in the "lost" inbox files.

Once that "before fixing" .pst file is found, how to I tell Outlook to use
that, and then to use the "after fixing" .pst?

Thanks!

If I were you, since messages apparently were left behind by the repair, I'd
start with a clean PST, replenish it from the original PST, and forget about
the repaired PST for now. The original PST is located in the original
directory and has the file type ".bak". Rename the old one back to ".pst",
but give it a new file name, like "Original.pst".

With Outlook closed, open Control Panel's Mail applet and click Data Files.
This will show you where your existing PST is (although you must know where it
is already since you repaired it and had to tell SCANPST where it was). Add a
new PST by clicking the Add button, browsing to the folder where you want it
(or accepting the default, clicking Next, giving it a display name (or
accepting the default) and finishing the wizard. Now, at the top of the Mail
applet, click Data Files again and then Open to add the original PST to the
mail profile. Return to the top level of the Mail applet and click the E-mail
Accounts button. Change the "Deliver new e-mail to the following location"
drop-down to point to the new PST you just added. Close the Mail applet and
start Outlook. Now you'll have a new set of default folders. Press Ctrl+6 to
use the Folder List view in the Navigaiton Pane and you can open each member
of the old set of folders, select all the items in it with Ctrl+A, and copy or
move the selection (drag or Ctrl+drag) to the corresponding new default folder
of the same name. With the calendar, you'll have to choose a table view like
By Category before Ctrl+A will select everything.

When you're done with the default folders' contents and you have folders you
created yourself, you can copy the entire folder to the root of the new
default folders, rather than copying only the contents. When you're finished
with all the copying, right-click the root of the old folder tree and choose
Close.

If you can't copy everything from the old folders and must employ the repaired
PST as well, it will also be listed in the Navigation Pane if you followed
what I've described. Otherwise you can open it with File>Open>Outlook Data
File. If you don't know where SCANPST created it, enable viewing hidden files
and folders and search for it, but it will be in the same folder as the PST
upon which SCANPST operated.
