From: Will on 4 Apr 2010 05:24 I've bought an Epson GT 10000+ A3 scanner on ebay which uses a scsi connection. I can use this on an old pc that I have somewhere but would love to cut out the middleman and scan straight to my macbook. I have seen that there are various usb to scsi adapters on ebay (eg Microtech DB25 USB to SCSI cable converter) a relatively high priced solution (£50+ Compared to A3 scanners are about £100). Has any one tried using these on a macbook? I've also seen a Microtech fireSCSI Xpress SCSI to Firewire Adapter which may do. Has any one had any experience with these over compatibility etc?

You won't need a Server edition of OSX, but you'll be using the older Mac as a scan server rather like a printer server. It's just another Mac on the network, sharing the scanner out, but a Mac with the necessary SCSI hardware. >Can I bother you about >a couple of question. >Does that mean I would not need a screen for it? You'll need one to set up the OS and whatnot, after which you can just use screen sharing (Prefs, Sharing, tick Screen sharing if Leopard, otherwise Vine Server or some other VNC server software). >Could I connect via firewire? You could (TCP/IP over fw), but ethernet/wifi would be more normal. >Which os server? Leopard if you want scanner sharing. Otherwise you'll be using Tiger or lower, and you'll have to scan locally on the oldmac and then pic up the pictures by file sharing after. >Which grey box mac would you recommend? Any one with a SCSI card. 800MHz+ if you want Leopard without messing with the installer scripts to bypass the limit. Cheers - Jaimie -- Networking is well understood and well standardized, unfortunately not by the same people.

Thanks, for that. I think I am there now apart from the 800mhz+ powermac but I'm looking. Anyone got one to sell cheap? I can collect from Wiltshire and London and in between?

For what it's worth I bought an very second hand (ex corporate) HP / Compaq P650 and installed Ubuntu and one of these half SCSI cards that used to come with scanners. On booting it asked to install something and did and my Canon SCSI 35mm film scanner works very well on it - I just copy the files over the LAN to the Macs or PCs. -- duncank

I can connect my Macbook to the Powermac fine, The Powermac is running Leopard and I've been trying Vuescan. This connects to an A4 usb scanner I have but not the GT10000+. I can't see mac drivers for this scanner, just a network utility for Scanners which doesn't see any scanner connected either. Is Leopard no good for this model? Has anyone ever connected this scanner to a Mac with success? I have been switching the scanner on first, then the Mac.
