why is the options option greyed out?

I have tried hitting enter or arrow keys when I am on a cell and various other methods of navigating through several different views yet the Tools-->Options menu remains greyed out. Actually most of the menus in the toolbar are greyed out. Can someone confirm that this is only happening because it is the Trial version and not something else I am doing wrong?
