whilst doing a spell check, word has stopped responding. how can I get it to
respond again without forcing quit and losing my work?

If Word has crashed, then you probably can't. If you have the autosave
recovery information preset, then Word should recover your work to the last
saved point when you re-start. Otherwise you can open the last saved version
of the document.
