Is there anybody knows how to deal with this situation?

Warning: Could not start Excel server for import, 'basic' mode will be used.
Refer to HELP XLSREAD for more information.

I use mac version and want to read part of an xls file...

You can't do what you want. Either save your spreadsheet in some other
format (which still probably won't help you read in just part of it
unless it's a binary format where you can figure out exactly where your
data is) or switch to Windows (not recommended!). The 'basic' mode is
rather limited and sometimes it doesn't work even to load in the whole
sheet.
