Your looking at a fast scanning counter in that tube. If you can find
it, there is a book on vacuum and gas counting/computing tubes, and
its in there. Sadly, I don't remember the title. Raid google books a
bit and you might find it

IIRC there was a mine being developed that could look for the outline of
a vehicle eg tank before jumping up and aiming an EFP at it.
