Captain Complication checking in. Looks like my problem was a dusty heat sink -sigh-. Didn't look that dirty, but maybe the stock HSF on a Corei7 need more attention than I am accustomed to giving.
Thanks for the feedback Andrew, appreciate it. I ended up installing 32bitSMP on an Athlon64 and everything ran well there, got me looking inside the guts of this primary box again.
FWIW, Automkv0.98.4 runs very well under Wine1.2 with XP emulation, full 8 core x264 encoding.
