There are plenty of alternatives.

Longer contracts tend to come with better incentives: 'free' laptop,
PS3, etc.

perhaps some of those customers just don't want a cheaper phone and £5
a month cheaper rental for the same use

or wouldn't see it if it jumped out in front of them

The longest contract length I will ever subscribe to when it comes to
mobile phones is 30 day. The only other thing I would like is the
facility to limit a direct debit to a maximum amount. This seems like
something the banking industry should have been offering for a long time.
