Well, you have some choices

If you want an expensive phone, its cost needs to be amortised over
the time of the contract

or you can have a SIM only contract a lot cheaper, and buy new phones
any time you want

O2, and other networks, offer 30 day contracts as well as ones which
last longer. See <http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity/1_month>.

You're not expecting a new handset, PS3, wide-screen TV, Wii and
GBP200 cashback on a one year contract are you? :)

Not at all, ( but if you know for a 12 month contract with all that
thrown in for a fiver a month let me know )
but I'm not repaired to sign away 2 years. I thought the 18 month
contracts where a bit cheeky.
I know they want to get a commitment for the future to get loans on the
base of their consumers list. I'm just not happy with it.

You can't guarantee work around here for a year now let alone contracts.

I will be waiting for the announcement in a few days of the release of
the IPhone 4G, and maybe there will be a reshuffle of the 'popular'
phones and pricing again as there was last year.

In CPW today looking at phones in the flesh, Assistant comes out with
all the speal, as is his job, but I noticed that when I let him carry on
with the pricing and benefits and functions of the phone, the 24 month
contract was , mm, not exactly missed out but said under muffles .

Someone I know who works there said they are having big problems getting
ppl to commit to 24 months. I think its a big mistake.

But I thin I'll go back to the 30 day contract and get my own phone.

On that note though I do have eye sight problems and am finding a phone
with a large font or big screen hard to find.

O2 are doing deals on 're-boxed' iPhones 8 gig 3G, but again want you to
sign your life away.

This is all a personal take on it. I know some will come back with 'But
but but company but' stuff.
But I can only comment on my own personal side of why I don't like it.

e2save have 24month Orange contracts with what works out at
100% cashback if done through topcashback, if you take only a
cheapo nokia 1661

I've plenty of good 3g phones to put the sim into,
it's the contract that interests me.

Who cares if the phone is cheaper? What matters is the cost of the phone
+ (cost per month x number of months).
