From: guskz on 31 May 2010 13:45 If all the galaxies due to gravity were to crash together (or come very close together) and form on Fat Albert galaxy, that would not necessarily mean the Universe's expansion would cease or affected it's rate of expansion. So if Fat Albert sat on an expanding balloon, it would not cause the balloon to stop expanding, or affect the rate of expansion. The most likely 6th factor affecting redshift is: Fat Albert (or a million evenly scattered baby Alberts) may be only temporarily affecting the rate of expansion. Explanation: As Fat Albert dents the surface of the balloon, there's less skin on the balloon for it to stretch outwardly. So this could only temporarily affect the balloon's growth. Example: Fat Albert dents the balloon skins and needs/uses 10km of the balloon's skin...but the balloon is only 5km and it's expansion produces "2km times the circumference of the balloon" of skin per billion years. Once Fat Albert gets his 10km of balloon skin to dent inwardly, the balloon's circumferencial expansion is no longer affected (meaning as if there was no Fat Albert to dent it).
