I would like to see a simple proof of FLT. Is there any theoretical
reason why a simple proof of FLT cannot exist?

Hi, Craig:

While no one can rule out the possibility of a "simple"
proof of FLT, it is known that FLT is false in some
number systems that are quite similar to the natural
numbers. So the feeling is that any proof will have a
certain amount of subtlety.

P. Ribenboim's book, Fermat's last theorem for amateurs,
may interest you.

....and I would like to see a simple proof of the Feit-Thompson theorem
but there is none so far...*sigh*

I can't say whether there is a theoretical reason (what EXACTLY is
this, anyway?) why a simple proof (simple...for whom?) of FLT cannot
exist, but there's lot of historical evidence, of failed attempts and
equivalent statements that show us that it is highly unlikely there's
a simple (say, at undergraduate in maths level) proof.

Now, just studying the stuff necessary to begin to understand the
proof that nowadays we have of FLT is pretty challenging...and
rewarding, too.

I'd like to see a simple cure for cancer, and an end to world hunger,
and peace in the Middle East.

where does the Easter bunny spend his summers?

I haven't proven that the Bible Code was a hoax;
only a hueristical argument about any ring
of letters "all of the letters" ... not the Object or
Bunny Rings, neccesarily.
