Friend has just got a contract iPhone 3GS with Orange. It needs to be
activated. She has an aged G3 iBook, which I have just finished updating with
the latest Safari and iTunes. Now, you need the iTunes store to activate the
iPhone, but on her iBook it gives a "cannot connect - try later" error
(-9813). There are lots of reports of this error on the web, with no
definitive fix. I have tried previously to get to the bottom this, with no
luck.

Will I be able to activate her iPhone using my MacBook? I have previously
connected her original iPhone to my MacBook (to create an iTunes store
account so I/she could download apps).

Cheers ... Mark

Had a brainwave - ask Apple!

Just got an 0800 number off saynoto0870.com, option 2 for technical support,
and spoke to a happy chap. All sorted.

Cheers ... Mark

What was the answer, by the way? I assume "yes" - I was in an Apple
store yesterday and they had an "iPhone Activation Corner" of iMacs
running iTunes!

Whilst holidaying with the sprogs and watching Favourite Teddy Bear
trundling through the x-ray, I speculated on the fun that could be had
with a teddy bear containing a radio-opaque teddy-bear skeleton.

When I bought my 1st gen iPod in the states I had nowhere to activate
it, so I went back into apple and asked, and they just said just use any
iTunes machine. Obviously that became common after that!

Yup - the phone was recognised as new/not mine. Activated just fine in
isolation to my settings etc. I assume it doesn't matter what Mac you do it
on (as long as you don't register it on that Mac too)

Cheers ... Mark
