The normal reason is that you don't have the codec, which isn't really
that crazy!

Unfortunately AVI is a wrapper format, so even if you had a tool to fix
one, it may not fix another. Have you tried them in VLC? that tends to
be robust enough to play broken things.

Vlc,MPlayer OS X 2, MPlayer OSX Extended etc. I have also tried
MediaInfo to see what codec they use.

What about the wmv though ? I have full installations of the latest
quicktime and Realplayer.. Is there any hope of playing them ?

I'd be inclined to shove them through Handbrake and turn them into a
less bletcherous format.

Not sure it will, but try Sound Studio, if you have it. It seems to open
a surprising bunch of files, some of which I have as system and alert
sound files from an ancient, obsolete OS8 machine. Nothing else I have
will touch them, including Streamclip, but Sound Studio is happy with
them.

Thanks Jim. You guys have all been great but Handbrake won't open them
either. I seem to be at a dead end :(

Tks again.
