From: Alan Munn on 21 Mar 2010 17:58 Hi, I'm trying to connect our old HP Laserjet 4m printer to our lab server which is running OSX Server 10.6 When I add the printer, it doesn't autoselect the PPD file for the printer, and when I try to find it manually, only an HP Laserjet PCL 4/5 driver shows up in the list, which is not the correct driver. Looking through the Apple "help", it seems to indicate that Software Update will automagically know which printers are connected and download the right software. As far as I can tell, this doesn't work (maybe it's only for USB connected printers, not IP or JetDirect printers). When I go to the HP website, it directs me to Apple, and when I go to Apple, it directs me to HP. Cute. Looking on both of the install disks that came with OS X Server, there is no additional printer driver package in the optional installs. I'm stymied. Has anyone managed to add new printer drivers to an OS X server? Thanks Alan

You do not need to download or install any additional software to print over USB, Ethernet, or 802.11b/g WiFi, depending on your printer and connection type. The latest HP software is available from: * Apples Mac OS X 10.6 retail DVD * Apple Software Updates * New Macintosh computers shipping with Snow Leopard * The Install DVD included with new Macs shipping with Snow Leopard Note: Updated drivers for some models are not included on Apples Mac OS X 10.6 retail DVD, and are available through Apple Software Update (ASU). ---- And thus, my problem reappears, since there is no actual source for the driver on the HP website. But now I think there's one thing I didn't try, was the Install DVD for the server machine itself (as opposed to the 10.6 Server Software install.) Maybe that will solve the problem. I'll check tomorrow when I'm back in the lab. Thanks for your help. Alan

It looks like printer drivers are now part of the optional installs under 10.6, and so were available on the install DVD for the machine. Alan
