What version? The one coming with slack 13.1 (amarok 2.3.0) does
play audio cds by inserting cd->select "Local Music"->add cd to
playlist.

Not hard:

mencoder /dev/dvd -oac lavc -ovc lavc -o $OUTFILE.avi

On the CD music topic, seriously, rip and encode. CDs can get damaged and
hard drive space is pretty cheap. When the drive dies, the CD will be
there hopefully undamaged to rip again to your easily manageble
collection. Amarok is good stuff IMO.

It's easiest to just assume you're breaking the law if you hear music,
because that's frankly kinda what it seems like. I have music I've
downloaded beacause the tape is too old and the CD is scratched (Rush -A
Farewell To Kings). I've bought it twice and have the tour ticket stub
and rather tattered concert T, but I assume it's illegal.

Danke, Joerg. 'Local Music' did it... after I turned off the mysql
database and used the local one.

I'll try switching a CD in a while, and if I can make it work again, I'll be
happy :-)

Ooops. It just crashed.

John.

Sorry yours crashed. Mine doesn't, but I don't hear anything, although
the progress indicator is moving. And yes, I've tried specifying the
output device preference for the 'Music' category. The test plays the
default KDE login music, but the CD audio is silent.

I asked a few months ago about playing a CD with KDE apps, and I got
several responses on how to do it. I think Amarok was included as one
that could play CDs. I, like you, couldn't find any way to play CDs in
KDE, so that's why I asked the question originally. Try searching
a.o.l.s. in Google Groups for my name, as I don't post very often. Or,
if you really want to pin my initial post down, search for workbone, as
I mentioned it.

I've quit using KDE, so that's why I can't remember much about what apps
play CDs, and thus can't give you more specific advice.
