I feel like such a f*****g idiot this morning, even more than usual. So,
that freakin' icon in the top right corner of Amarok allows one to mute/
unmute the playback. Sheesh!

Sorry for the wasted bytes.

I don't know what's wrong with it, but after some web research, it seems to
be busted for many. I just installed Amarok-2.3.1 from source, and still no
joy. Debug shows crypic SQL errors such as trying to write to an
uninitialized database... Crapo, Amarok ought to initialize its own
database. Oh well... I hope they get it straight one of these days.
Amarok 1.4 worked ok.

XMMS just works out of the box.

Oh, guess what. The database does not initialize itself until a record is
inserted. Guess what? I don't have any mp3s on my box. I just play CDs
and occasionally listen to web radio. So I added two fm streams to Amarok,
and it built the tables that it needs (Sheesh: I'd build the table first,
and then populate it.) Now, somehow, but clicking and fiendishly diddling,
I managed to get Amarok to swallow a CD and put it into it's database...

And wonder of wonders, it went to the next track without crashing.

So part of the problem is lack of documentation that explains how to get the
puppie (Amarok) up and running.

Ulp. It just crashed going from track two to track three.

Can you say, "software bloat?"

There is always good, old, works-great workbone.

Workbone plays CDs without all the overhead of those deluxe systems.
Do "workbone" at a console or "workbone -a" at the command line in a
gui. Be sure to press num-lock, then use the keypad controls.

Software bloat and over ambitious release schedules that do not take into
account known nasty bugs.

I'm gonna Konqueror this beast (Amarok) before I move on to other pastures.
