Are there any newsgroups specificly for Android phones that are worth
requesting from my NNTP provider?

I don't think there are any proper Android specific newsgroups around.
However, some of the Android specific mailing lists are available via NNTP
from news.gmane.org, see http://news.gmane.org/search.php?match=android (you
will have to add news.gmane.org to your news reader).

I asked if eternal september could carry it and got back the same
response, it's not an official group, so no. Is anyone interested
enough in an android group to support an official application?

The xda forums etc are OK, but they're not usenet ...
