Daniel,
I'm having a similar issue. Did you ever fix this? Any knowledge you can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Server 2003 Sound Thru RDP
22-Mar-09

Hi,

I have a Server 2003 R2 64 bit server that I work with via RDP (Remote
Desktop Protocol) from my Vista SP1 64 bit workstation. The server indicates
that the audio drivers are successfully installed. I have the RDP
connection's "Remote computer sound" setting set to "Bring to this
computer." On the server I go into the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control
panel. When I open it, "Mute" is checked and the the "Device volume" is
turned all the way down. I can uncheck Mute and turn up the volume, but
when I click "Apply," the system rechecks Mute and turns the volume all the
way back down. On the "Audio" tab "Sound playback" "Default device" is set
to the one available option: "Microsoft RDP Audio Driver."

How do I get my server to make sound back through RDP?

On other tid-bit of evidence: On the "Sounds" tab, in the "Program events"
control, I can select an event that has a sound associated with it and click
the Play sound button (arrow head). When I do I get this error message:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Windows cannot play the XXXXX.wav file. It may be damaged or may not be a
valid sound file. Replace the file and try again.
--------------------------------------------------------------
However, I when I make a file share connection from my workstation, my
workstation plays the files just fine.
