This method with Safari works for .flv files but not HTML5 on YouTube.

After trying this several times, I found that I was wrong about having
to wait for the video to finish downloading.

I also found that stopping the video from playing does not stop it from
downloading. If you double-click the file in the Activity window, it
starts a fresh download in parallel with the original download to the
screen.

After starting the download in the Activity window, you may want to
close the page in Safari. Its continued download may slow down the
download from the Activity window, depending on how fast your internet
connection is!
