This app allows you to control your Mac from an iPod/iPhone. However,
the server seems to quit when you log off. Consequently, I have not
been able to figure out how use the app to log in, and I don't want to
stay logged in when I am away from the computer. Is there a solution?

Actually, I think I found out about Truphone from them. However, there
is nothing on that site or its links that help with RemoteTap. They
mention Jaadu VNC, of which I am aware, but not problems with RemoteTap.

I have been researching this app and it either can't wake up and log
into a Mac or nobody has figured out how to do it. I think this is
because the server must only run when you are logged on, which is dumb.

They ought to write a little program, maybe run as a daemon, to watch
port 5902 and fire up the server rather than waiting for somebody to
actually log in. I have no idea how to do that, but I can't imagine it
is that terribly difficult.

Why bother, when so many other apps that do work are available?

Try reading the article I mention above. ; )

Oh, I see where you are going. Thanks, but that isn't the issue.

I have LogMeIn, which won't turn the computer on or wake it if it is
asleep but will do everything else, including restart it. However, I
thought it might have done something to cause a login problem. It turns
out LogMeIn most likely was not the culprit.

In the meantime, you had suggested getting a VNC client. I checked
around and RemoteTap, which runs on the iPod, was getting rave reviews.
The only problem was a small number of people said they could not get it
to log them in. I figured they probably just had it set up wrong.

It turns out I had forgotten something because it had been so many years
since I got my first Mac. Out of the box, as I recall, you don't get a
login screen. You have to set it up to do that. Apparently a
relatively small number of the people who use RemoteTap have their Macs
set up that way and those people, of whom I am one, cannot use RemoteTap
to log on.

I thought the solution might be relatively simple. Have RemoteTap run
its server as long as the computer is running or have it watch port
5902. However, since it only cost $5, I was not terribly interested in
spending more money to try additional solutions, especially when LogMeIn
works fine.

The one thing I would add to this is that he may well want to set that
Mac up for Remote Management, not just Screen Sharing.
