That's strange. I've never had Mail burp once after using it for years on at least 10 different Macs? Which operating system are you using? Which Mac and its specs? >What is the correct process to remove Mail, re-install it >and then recover the mail databases (from Time Machine). I've never had to remove Mail before, but likely to fully remove it, you would just drag its icon from your Applications folder to the trash. >Are there any "hidden" bits that I need to clear >out to assure that everything is reset to a clean >state? You may also need to go into your Library and drag a few more things to the trash, such as plists, and the such. Google it and you should find directions. >Would I be better to manually recover the mail database? >How? Why would you need to recover that? If all of your mail is still stored server-side, as it should be, then once you install Mail, or any other client, all of your mail stored on your server should download to the client again. I've set up many Macs to use mail, and after I direct my Macs' Mail client to fetch my mail from Gmail, then Mail on my new Macs looks exactly the same as it does on my older Macs. If Mail just isn't working for you for some reason, then you can always download and use Mozilla's Thunderbird email client instead. Apple's Mail client has some nice features, but Thunderbird is a good client too.

I IMAP through Gmail... Out of the blue, Mail wasn't receiving mail. It would send though, and Activity Monitor reported Mail to be gobbling up system resources like some kind of big black hole*... the whole machine was nearly brought to it's knees whenever Mail was running. Gmail worked fine from the website, and a nearby neighbor who also IMAP's Gmail said she was up and running fine. The first thing I tried was tossing Mail's prefs, and in my case doing so was 100% successful... though I did have to set my prefs back, and it took about 45 minutes for Mail to re-sync with Gmail. I'm running 10.6.3 on a 2GHz Intel iMac and Mail 4.2 (1078). *Black holes... they're where God was dividing by zero. Erik
