That is phenomenal! Admittedly MS are no where near their peak, but I'm
stunned.

I'll leave the discussion on whether we've swapped one evil company for
another to others...

Who cares about this stuff?

It's all neither here nor there.

Apple makes money from hardware, so it's a more expensive firm than MS,
which mostly makes money permitting peopel to use its software - a
cheaper business to run.

<shrug> MS is losing it; Apple's expanded its range of markets.

But really: who cares? Business people, investors, folk like that. Me?
No.

Rowland.

You forget that Apple used to be much, much bigger than Microsoft. Then
Bill Gates did a deal to sell DOS to IBM...

That moved Microsoft up, Apple moved itself down!

You are stunned most of the time.

I know that I'm talking to Apple fans, but I'm a bear for punishment. That
article shows that techie types shouldn't be allowed to comment on finance.
The "bigger" comes from market capitalization. It's the market value of a
share times the number of shares outstanding. MSFT and Apple are virtually
tied at around $220 B. The figures change daily, based on stock price
fluctuations.

What sets MSFT and Apple apart is the PE, or price to earnings ratio.
Apple's PE is 24.00 whereas MSFT is 12.96. A good rule of thumb for
investors is a PE of 15. If it's over 15, the stock is considered
over-priced. By that standard, Apple is over-priced. It's not a problem
until investors decide to dump the stock. Sooner or later it will happen. I
wouldn't invest in Apple for that reason.

Also MSFT has an edge in profit margin: 27.62 vs 22.77.

Let me stress that none of the above has any meaning for the average Mac
weenie sipping a latte at Pret A Servir.
