....was not smooth. I followed the destructions in the sheet provided
with the pad but the iTunes window on the Mac showed no sync tabs -
just a message saying that there was no SIM. Indeed there was no SIM
but it was both tethered and had a wi-fi connection. Anyway, I
unplugged the cable, stuck it in again and this time it asked me
whether I wanted to set it up as a new iPad or restore it from a
backup. I took the first option and it went ahead with sync-ing my
music, podcasts, videos and so on. Looking promising so far.

And it is really, very well-designed - a real beauty.

I plugged mine in, it came up with iTunes, told me I had already synced
an iPad with this machine and did I want to restore from the backup
'Woodys phone'.
I said new device, sync iPhoto but not music yet, and it is off syncing
(which is going to take a while).
Oh then it came up with xcode asking me if I wanted to provision it as a
developer device.

A lot smoother I think

It is better than it seemed it would be, and I was expecting good!

In addition to what I think I read here I think they said on the
Gadget show that a good thing about the iPad might be that it prompts
other manufacturers to produce something similar, but with USB ports
etc.

You have been a tablet man for quite a while haven't you, is there
anything else out there that is physically similar?

The one I played with last week was a bit heavier than I thought it might be.

Any alternatives are likely to be thicker, slower, and be running a
clunky Windows install.

They'll *need* USB to get bloatware onto them.

Or, they'll run a version of Linux and leave you wondering why the hell
you bothered as you need to install patches and use terminal hacks to
get them to do things an iPad will do out of the box.
