From: Oliver Regenfelder on 4 Jun 2010 09:38 Hello, I have been looking into Visual Studio 2008 professional offers, and some webshops over it for ~100$ with the restriction that these are OEM versions and you can't call microsoft for support. Is it legal to use those versions for commercial development? Are there any legal/technical pitfalls with these cheap offers? Best regards, Oliver
From: RB on 4 Jun 2010 11:26 I have witnessed some folks that got burned buying Cad (Autodesk) software under similiar adverstisements. The key thing to verify before buying with the seller (and the manufacturer in this case MS) is "are you going to be able to register the software without paying anymore money" or are you going to have reinstall after so many days of trial, or not be able to save files etc etc. In other words obviously you might could live without the support, but verify what else is not being said. Some of these adds that I have seen I would not want them having my credit card number since many of them appear to be a front just to get that. If I bought at one it would only be with a newly offered card that I could cancel immediately after purchase to prevent future unauthorized purchases on it. If you can sign up for a night class where tuition is not an arm and leg you can get a good Academic discount Pro version that is just like the Pro but (unless things have changed) it is not eligable for upgrade discounts in the future. Of and thanks for the reply to my earlier post. RB

I kind of doubt there is such thing as "OEM VS" The OEM idea works for Windows and Office, where an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) bundles the OS, and sometimes Office, with the computer you are using. Can also be a scanning or photo-editing application comming with a camera or scanner, video editing or dvd creation software comming with a camcorder, cd/dvd burning software with a dvd-rw, and so on. I can't imagine any hardware that can come bundled with VS. So it "smells" very illegal. -- Mihai Nita [Microsoft MVP, Visual C++] http://www.mihai-nita.net ------------------------------------------ Replace _year_ with _ to get the real email
