From: Shaudy on 23 Mar 2010 10:56 I am attempting to compare 2 projects in MSP 2003. I have both open and am using the compare functionality. I am aware that the Unique ID field is a key component and have noted that often these do not match for the same line item from one version to the next as different individuals are preparing this project. When I insert a new line to attain the same Unique ID between both projects for a specific line, and subsequently delete the old line, the compare still does not recognize that these 2 lines are associated and the same. I cannot do this for all lines, but even as a test, I could not get the compare function to work as designed per discussions in other threads. I understand that some may have developed a macro to address this challenge. I already responded to a thread for this macro that was last dated in March 2006. I'm hoping that by posting another general question, that the entire team may receive this question such that an answer would be more probable. Please send any macros to smoayery(a)yahoo.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks! Shaudy, I don't think attempting to re-configure one file's Unique ID to "track" that of another file meets the required genealogy for the compare utility, but then I've never tried that. If different users are creating their own version of a file it's not clear to me how you would expect to be able to compare them since they are independent files. Some of the data and some of the entries might be similar but that's about it. For your reference, the existing compare utility has performance issues. I'm told those are being addressed in the latest version of Project, (2010), although I haven't seen or tried the new version. In my original response, (circa 2005), I cited a macro I had developed for comparing two files using a field other than the Unique ID field. Unfortunately that macro is not available for distribution. I of course can't speak for the other person who responded to the original post. Perhaps his macro is available. Since the files you are working with are independently created by more than one user, your desire to run a comparison in Project may not be your best approach. You might want to try exporting the Project data to Excel and then comparing. John Project MVP
