Your easy way leaves you system vulnerable to exploits, you don't want
security updates?. Your hard way is not so hard and does not involve
manually editing the registry: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

True, but not all updates are security patches - the 'easy way' above will
present a list of the updates available and you can choose which ones you
want. I did clearly say that the easy way will 'disable' the update, but
obviously you don't want to disable or ignore the important ones. I did this
with a software update for an unused smart card reader built-in to my
keyboard - I think you will agree, this could be safely ignored.

Fair enough re smart card reader update.. but the only problem is, it's
very likely that those other updates that fail to install will be some of
the essential security updates.
