When I right click on a file in Windows explorer and click on "Scan
with AVG Free" in the context menu it (Avg) wants to scan the full
system starting in the Windows directory. Is their a setting
someplace in Avg that needs to be changed or something to get it to
scan JUST the file or directory that I want to check at that time??

I am using Windows XP SP3. I just upgraded Avg to ver 9 from whatever
the prior version was and the right click context menu worked fine to
scan individual files or directories with that. I deleted the prior
version using Windows add / remove before installing ver 9 of Avg.

Any help appreciated. TIA

Click the + next to My Computer, click the + next to Local Disk (C:)

Now scroll down to the file you want to scan.

Another way, do a Search/Find for the files you want & right click on
them.
