Having some trouble with display drivers and other things on an XP Pro
PC with a A7V266-E motherboard without the Promise RAID controller, I
decided to try a Windows repair. This was an OEM installed XP (no CD)
so I used a retail CD "belonging" to another installation. Everything
seemed to go well, and after finishing the install app rebooted.
Instant result: BSOD with error 7B. One of the error parameters is 34,
which according to MS indicates typically indicates "Disks or storage
controllers that are failing, defective, or improperly configured or
storage-related drivers or programs (tape management software, for
example) that are not fully compatible with Windows XP Professional".
This seems to me a little surprising, since Windows has just finished
installing on the same HD it should boot from.

I can see that the HD is accessed a few times before the BSOD. I am
able to boot from the Windows CD and access the repair console, so I
can get at the disk that way, but I have no idea what to do. I have
read lots of MS texts concerning the 7B error, but they point in too
many directions to be of any help.

I suspect an IDE driver problem, but I have no idea if forcing a driver
on XP would help, or which driver I should use in that case.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! I'm stuck.
